Instruction on the Holy Eucharist
In his encyclical letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia, published on April 17, 2003, Pope John Paul II called upon the appropriate Roman Congregations to prepare and publish an instruction, “including prescriptions of a juridical nature” explaining the “deeper meaning of liturgical norms” in the light of liturgical abuses in violation of those same norms”. This resulted in a new instruction entitled Redemptionis sacramentum. For more information about the Redemptionis sacramentum from the USCCB, click here.

Revised General Instruction of the Roman Missal
The rite of the Mass is defined by a document called the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). The latest revised version of the GIRM was published by the Vatican (in Latin) in 2001, and translated into English by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2002. For more information about the revised GIRM from the USCCB, click here. The revised GIRM describes several changes in the rite of mass, which are discussed below.
